EDAI SYMPOSIUM: Advances in Autism from a Multidisciplinary Perspective
In an innovative event held at Caixaforum Madrid, the EDAI Symposium on “Advances in Autism from a Multidisciplinary Perspective” brought together national and international experts on the field of Autism on the 23rd November 2023. Notable attendees included Doña Alejandra Serrano, the Director General of Care for People with Disabilities in the Community of Madrid.
The technical sessions highlighted key topics in autism research. Leticia Asenjo, psychologist and Technical Director of EDAI, explored the practical implementation of the double empathy model in bridging the communication gap. Frédérique Bonnet-Brilhault, psychiatrist from the Université de Tours, France, delved into the role of sensory perception in autism development. Elena Martínez Cayuelas, neuropediatrician from the Jiménez Díaz Foundation, discussed the connection between sleep, circadian systems, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
A significant aspect of the Symposium was the presentation on evidence-based intervention strategies. Therapists from EDAI, led by Alicia Portillo, shared insights alongside Elena Martínez Cayuelas, emphasizing the importance of evidence in shaping effective interventions. Pedro Caldeira, child psychiatrist from the Pediatric Hospital of Lisbon, addressed the challenging task of differentiating Autism from Sensory Regulation Disorders in childhood.
The Symposium also featured unique perspectives. Sara Codina, an author and advocate, provided a first-person insight into living with autism. Paula Villena, a neuropsychologist from the Autism Federation Madrid, presented innovative approaches to addressing behavioral challenges in autism.
